Making China’s Technology Development Strength into an Ally p. 39

China is no longer simply the “factory of the world.”  But what technological and product development capabilities does China possess?  How many Chinese corporations like Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., Vimicro Corp. and TechFaithWireless Inc. are able to take on the rest of the world?

The Sinking Domestic Cellular Phone: Yearly Sales Go to 2/3 at Worst    p. 77

More than 10 manufacturers of mobile phone terminals are wrestling for a slice of this 95 million-subscriber market, and highly sophisticated models are literally flying off the shelves.  The Japanese mobile phone market has sometimes been ridiculed as a “remote island” for nurturing its own distinct ecosystem within a unique business environment.  That island is now going through major environmental change after discussions by the Mobile Business Study Group of Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications have pushed toward a rethink of the sales incentives system, a core element propping up this particular environment.  Environmental change would have a huge impact on the island’s ecosystem.

The “Unification Era” of the Web and Desktop Starts   p. 85

Computer technology is about to change.  Now that the World Wide Web (WWW) has become a popular medium for provision of application software, technologies used for both WWW software development and general program development are starting to have more in common.  Rather than use different technologies for different operating systems, the latest trend is to develop programs with the same technology as used in development of WWW content, or vice versa, apply technology for developing PC programs to WWW content development.

The Leading Edge of Li-ion Rechargeable Battery Development for Automobiles   p. 93

In 2006, a series of accidents involving the ignition of lithium ion rechargeable batteries used in notebook computers and mobile phones severely damaged the credibility of such batteries and stalled efforts to incorporate them into hybrid vehicles.  What would a lithium ion rechargeable battery able to endure automotive conditions be made of?  Durability, lifespan and cost are just three of the issues, not to mention safety.  We delved into the frontline of development at this conference on automotive power systems.

Looking to Reduce “Obvious Patents,” the US Supreme Court Upends Patent Criteria        p. 101

The Supreme Court of the United States in April 2007 delivered a controversial ruling rejecting a set of standards that have been used for more than 20 years to determine patent validity.  It seems like the ruling is going to weaken the effectiveness of patents.

SE2004: Recommendations for Undergraduate Software Engineering Curricula     p. 105

Over three years from autumn 2001, the IEEE Computer Society and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), both in the United States, put together Software Engineering 2004 (SE2004), a recommended software engineering curriculum for university undergraduate programs.  This is a Japanese translation of a paper that appeared in the journal, IEEE Software.  It was written by leading members of the steering committee for the SE2004 Project and introduces an outline of the suggested curriculum.  The writers say the purpose of the curriculum guidelines was to improve the career prospects of undergraduates.

Introduction to Mobile Power Electronics (Part 2): Power Supplies Determine the Shape and Features of Mobile Equipment              p. 132

Mobile equipment has to contain a power supply for its own electrical energy.  The type of power supply is influenced by characteristics of the mobile product, such as external dimensions, operating time, lifespan and safety.  The second installment takes a look at current items of note, including lithium ion rechargeable batteries, electric double-layer capacitors and fuel cells, explaining their characteristics and how they work.

An Intellectual Property Course (Part 5): Protecting Copyright and Business Secrets           p. 143

In this tutorial, we explain the intellectual property basics for engineers by solving problems at the level of an intellectual property exam (level 2) run by a private sector organization.  In the fifth tutorial, we look at copyright and the Unfair Competition Prevention Law.  This knowledge is essential for engineers, for example when they choose to quote papers written by others in presentations to scientific gatherings

Understanding Color Space (Part 4): Towards Reproducing Ultimate Color            p. 150

Faithful reproduction of color is an extremely important element in developing imaging systems, for example in fields such as telemedicine and e-commerce.  The final tutorial in this series introduces spectrum-based color reproduction, in addition to ICC Profiles color management, as a system for achieving the ultimate in color reproduction.
