Nikkei Network

March 2008

FEATURE 1

As launch nears!

How to Use NGNs

NGNs (Next-Generation Networks) are on their way. Services from NTT East and West will be launched at the end of March in parts of Tokyo and Osaka. Initially, they will only be usable in limited geographical areas, but coverage will expand rapidly, and they are likely to become familiar services for users. But even though the launch is close, little is known about NGN services. This feature looks into the usability and functionality of four different applications.

General Overview:

Operating and using IP networks - the shape of services is becoming clearer

Application 1: Internet access

Connecting using PPPoE. Exercise care in using IPv6

Application 2: IP phone/Video phone

Making high picture quality and high sound quality a reality. Issues remain for business use.

Application 3: Connection between corporate locations

Three menus can be used. Special features for lines connecting using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)

Application 4: Providing service

Greater possibilities for SNI (application Server-Network Interface). Devices for helping use also appearing.

Bonus Article:

Expectations for NGN as seen in field trials

Beginners’ Question

To what extent are non-alphanumeric characters used for domain names?

FEATURE 2

Improve Your Skills

Master Class in OSPF

The “routing” which determines the path taken by a packet is a vital element to any network. Currently, the most widely used protocol to create this routing is OSPF (Open Shortest Path First). But there are a lot of people who think that the mechanism is complicated and difficult to understand. This feature has readied a 5-step exposition in response to the difficulty levels of the OSPF mechanism. Let’s look at learning all about OSPF using our “Master Class.”

Preparation:

Improve by encouraging reading

Level 1: What on earth is OSPF? Let’s try to understand its characteristics and examples of use.

Level 2: Mastering the flow of routing information and “costs”

Level 3: Let’s set up OSPF on a router and look at its actual operation

Level 4: Let’s learn about the contents of LSA (Link State Advertisement) which lie at the heart of OSPF.

Level 5: Large-scale networks are also possible as long as the area is set

FEATURE 3

Learning Network Infrastructure in Charts

IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6)

A new Internet protocol that was created in order to increase the number of addresses
