Concerns of IT-Related Academic Societies
Their
relationship with the industry is slipping away
- In recent years, there has been a growing trend in which IT engineers
and the people in charge of information systems in Japan are not
joining academic societies.
For example, the Information Processing
Society of Japan, which is the country’s largest society specializing
in IT, has lost over 7,000 members, or 26 percent of the membership,
over the past ten years. Most of the deserters were people
within the industry. The decline of academic societies could
lead to the decline of the industry.
This article, through
assessment of the current situation, examines the reasons why these
IT-related academic societies are not functioning properly
- The Information
Processing Society of Japan has been alienated from its members
- The stagnation of academic societies overshadows the future of
the industry
- An academic society in the United States earns $3.8 billion annually
- The search for collaboration between the industry and academia
has begun
- The relationship between the industry and academia has to change (Interview
with the president of the Information Processing Society of Japan)
