Cover Story 1
Three barriers stand up against healthy B FLET’S
Subscribers to the B FLET’s service are surging. NTT now, however,
cannot simply enjoy the trend because it faces three issues: (1) It cannot work
out advantages for “Hikari” (FTTH service), (2) the construction
support system is too busy with its present work, and (3) the service lacks applications
from which income is generated.
Unless NTT can overcome these barriers,
it may not only be unable to achieve the goal of “30 million subscribers
by 2010,” but also lose the current momentum some day.

speed-up devices” which declare that they will overcome this problem are
mushrooming. If the effective speed is improved by using these devices,
the differentiation between LAN and WAN will virtually disappear, and enterprise
networks will also change completely.
