The Grand Prize went to Mr. Yusuke Mori, associate professor at Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University, and his colleagues, for their "Femtosecond Laser Protein Crystallization Technology."

The awarding ceremony will take place at Hotel Okura Tokyo from 11:00 am, April 7.

- Femtosecond Laser Protein Crystallization Technology

Mr. Yusuke Mori and his colleagues established a completely innovative way to process protein fit for structure analysis, using femtosecon laser.  It is to forcibly ingenerate crystal nuclei by irradiating protein solution with a femtosecond laser and churn the solution to extract large, high-quality crystals.  The technology significantly enhanced the success rate of crystallization, from what used to be 20-30% to 70%.  The establishment of this technology has also given rise to a university-based venture "SOSHO, Inc."
