Nikkei BP Technology Awards 2008 – the Grand Prize Goes to "Establishment of Human iPS Cells"

Tokyo – March 21, 2008 – Nikkei Business Publications (President & CEO: Seiichi Oteru; Tokyo) announced the winners of "Nikkei BP Technology Awards 2008."

Nikkei BP Technology Awards, established to contribute to the country's technological development and marking the eighteenth this year, honors excellent technologies in the fields of electronics, information and communications, machine systems, construction, healthcare/biotechnology, and ecology that will bring impact to industries and society as a whole.

The awardees were decided among technologies developed during the year of 2007 by our reviewing committee (Chairman: Shoji Tanaka, Vice President, International Superconductivity Technology Center). The Grand Prize went to Yamanaka Lab, led by Professor Shinya Yamanaka of Kyoto University, for their "Establishment of Human iPS Cells" (induced human pluripotent stem cells). The Section Prizes were given to eleven technologies, as follows:
