NikkeiBP EcoManagement Forum organizes a seminar to discuss the roles
of Japan in the global environment
Tokyo -- October 17, 2002 -- On October 4, NikkeiBP EcoManagement Forum
held at United Nations University in Tokyo a seminar by the theme of
"Reestablishing Japan's New Leadership Through Environmental Management."
Prominent figures from the Japanese government, universities and major
companies in and outside Japan have gathered to discuss the roles of Japan
anticipated in solving the global environmental problems.
Mr. Maurice Strong, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and the then
Secretary General of the 1992 Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, delivered a
keynote speech entitled "Roles of Japanese Companies Anticipated in Global
Environment and World Harmony." In his speech, he claimed that Japanese
companies, with their high technology levels, should lead the world in
environmental conservation. Mr. Hisashi Hosokawa, representative of The
Strategy Design Institute and former Administrative Vice-Minister of Japan's
Ministry of International Trade and Industry, remarked in his speech that
eco-conscious management is the key to regaining presence and recovering
competitiveness for Japanese companies. A roundtable discussion was then
held to unfold a heated discussion on how to reestablish Japan's new leadership
through environmental management. Mr. Hiroshi Ohki, former Japanese
Minister of the Environment and Mr. Nay Htun, Executive Director for Asia and
the Pacific of University for Peace, each delivered a short speech at the
beginning of this discussion.
Top executives of thirty special membership companies of NikkeiBP
EcoManagement Forum including Mr. Masamitsu Sakurai, President & COO of
Ricoh Co., Ltd., Mr. Kouichi Ikeda, President & COO of Asahi Breweries Ltd.
and Mr. Hiroyuki Fujimura, Chairman and Representative Director of Ebara
Corporation attended this seminar. Ms. Wakako Hironaka who was the former
Director-General of The Environment Agency of Japan, Mr. Takamitsu Sawa,
Director of Institute of Economic Research, Kyoto University and Professor
Hiroshi Komiyama of The University of Tokyo participated in this enthusiastic
discussion as well. From NikkeiBP, Chairman of the Board Hisao Yoshimura,
President & CEO Yukoh Kawamura and Executive Managing Director Katsuhiko
Hirano attended the seminar where they pledged to make efforts toward realizing
a sustainable economic society by exerting the influence over the business
community NikkeiBP has as a media company. The top executives of major
Japanese companies enthusiastically participated in both the seminar and the
following buffet party in spite of their hectic schedule. NikkeiBP
EcoManagment Forum will further strive to provide opportunities for Japanese
