Tokyo -- November 6, 2002 -- NikkeiBP announced the five winners of "2002 NikkeiBP Innovators Award." The award was established this year with the aim of revitalizing Japan's bleak industry. The screening of the award was conducted to select candidates from diversified professions and fields, with unique ideas originating in Japan. Selected as candidates were engineers who contributed to the development of technology in Japan through their creative research; those with innovative technology and business model that have the potential to nurture the future of the Japanese industry; and people who put their efforts to revitalizing the business of major companies. The commendation ceremony will be held on November 21 at Takanawa Prince Hotel in Tokyo to award the winners with a certificate of commendation and a prize.

Herewith are the details of the five winners:

Winner for the Special Award
Mr. Koichi Tanaka, a fellow researcher at Shimadzu (2002 Nobel Prize Laureate in chemistry)

Winners for the Excellence Award

  • Associate Professor Ryuichi Morishita of Osaka University Medical School (founder of AnGes MG)
  • Aplix CEO & Chairman Ryu Koriyama
  • ESI President Mitsuji Kyozuka

The Grand Prize went to Studio Ghibli Producer Suzuki for the outstanding work in 2002 Berlin Film Festival's Golden Bear Award-winner "Spirited Away (Sen To Chihiro No Kamikakushi)." Spirited Away had the record-breaking box office of 30 billion yen, drawing 23.4 million audiences. Suzuki was awarded the Grand Prize not only for creating high quality animation, but also for introducing a tie-up method with sponsoring companies at the stage of animation production process. This new process gave animators the opportunity to create magnificent animations by receiving abundant production fee beforehand in exchange for extending media rights to sponsoring companies. This approach has led to the upgrading of animators' working environment standard, for instance, establishing studios for the animators anew for devoting themselves in animation production.

The Excellence Award went to Assistant Professor Morishita of Osaka University Medical School for pioneering a therapeutic technique in which HGF was used -- a discovery of Osaka University Professor Toshikazu Nakamura -- to create new blood vessels. Morishita contributed to the development of medical products that help prevent cell necrosis. His discovery is expected to help develop therapeutic products for dementia and Parkinson's disease. Aside from being an assistant professor, Morishita also went beyond the field of research and established bio-venture company AnGes MG. The company is to submit an application for a clinical trial in the U.S. by end of this year.

Aplix CEO & Chairman Koriyama was recognized for facilitating the application of Java, which had long been software for PCs, to mobile phones and compact informational equipment. He is a pioneer in Japan to have explored into the age of ubiquitous computer. Although Java is a software originating in the U.S., Java application to compact information equipments is based on a totally new idea. He was evaluated for creating an opportunity for the Japanese computer industry to make a leap forward.

President Kyozuka of ESI was awarded the Excellent Award for making unique challenges to waste problems, which is one of Japan's major environmental issues. Kyozuka established a system in which supermarket garbage is turned into compost. The system is dubbed as an "Environmental Value Chain" because not only does the company sell compost machines, but also collect/compost garbage, sell fertilizers made from compost and buy goods including vegetables from farmers using such fertilizer for supermarket sales.
