NET&COM21 Draws 86,435 Visitors and 331 Exhibitors



-- February 21, 2001 -- Held from February 7 to 9, NET&COM21 attracted a total of 86,435 visitors, up 10,318 from last year. This year's event was centered on the theme of finding the optimum solutions for web-based enterprise networking systems and e-business models. Together with its three concurrent exhibitions, namely Network Security Expo, Linux Exhibition and CTI Solution Expo, NET&COM21 introduced 331 exhibitors in 925 booths that showcased state-of-the-art networking solutions, including e-commerce solutions, e-marketing strategies, online security technologies and wireless devices. Thanks to the cooperation of Japan External Trade Organization, the event attracted seventy exhibitors from overseas.

At the venue of NET&COM21, NIKKEI NET BUSINESS held a ceremony to commend ten winners of the fourth "EC Grand Prix 2001." The award, given based on the assessment of business potential, creativity and advancement, received applications in five categories from a total of 573 net businesses. The "Grand Prix" went to Sofmap.com for its user-friendly services and sales of all sorts of digital consumer electronics with discounts.

WORLD PC EXPO to Be Announced in China


NikkeiBP will hold a session to announce WORLD PC EXPO 2001 in Shanghai in March. Inviting the top and middle executives of Chinese IT companies and organizations, the event will take place at Garden Hotel Shanghai on March 14.

Preceding this Archive session in mainland China, WORLD PC EXPO 2001 was also announced in Taiwan on December 15, 2000 at Far Eastern Plaza Hotel. Attracting 215 attendees from 125 companies, the event featured Makoto Kawakami, Editor-in-Chief of NIKKEI WIN PC, who talked about the latest trends in the PC and IT markets in Japan. This Archive session in Taiwan was reported by Economic Daily News, a leading newspaper in Taiwan, showing the rising interest of the Taiwanese companies in the Japanese market.

New Web site to Introduce Research and Marketing Services


NikkeiBP opened a new Web site late last year to introduce and promote the products and services of the sections that belong to its Consulting Group, i.e. Research Dept., Technology Research Dept., Market Forecast Dept., Internet Audience Rating Center and Direct Mailing Service Dept. The aim is to boost the awareness of the quality products and services that NikkeiBP is offering in the arena of marketing information, research and consulting services.

Although each of these sections have its own Web site, the new Web site functions as a cross-sectional platform to introduce all the available products and services from NikkeiBP in the scope of research and marketing. They include, for example, research on the wireless Internet market, proliferation research on Internet usage and Web brand survey among many others. In addition, the Web site is capable of responding promptly to inquiries and orders from customers. The URL of this new Web site is http://consul.nikkeibp.co.jp/ (in Japanese only)

Winners of the "2000 Venture of the Year" Awarded


On January 24, NIKKEI VENTURE awarded the winners of "2000 Venture of the Year" in recognition of the outstanding venture businesses in Japan. Screening was conducted in two categories by financial & market analysts and investors: One for venture businesses that underwent an initial public offering from November 1999 to October 2000 and the other for those that were yet to be listed on the stock market as of October 2000.

In the category of listed companies, Rakuten received the highest assessment. The online shopping mall gathered a diversity of stores amounting to 5,200 as of December 2000, and bought the portal site Infoseek for its further development. Companies that also received awards in this category were Seikoh Giken (maker of optical devices and injection molds) and Yozan (chipmaker dedicated to next- generation cell phones).

The most highly rated company in the category of unlisted businesses was Usen Broad Networks, a fast growing provider of high-speed, inexpensive broadband services. The second and the third winners were Matsui Securities and Bookoff Corporation (second- hand bookstore), respectively.
