Preliminary Brand Japan Survey: Sony Is the Top-of-the-Mind Brand
As a preliminary stage of its "Brand Japan Survey," NikkeiBP conducted an online survey in October 2000 to study influential brands in Japan, collecting responses from 2,105. The respondents were asked to name a maximum of five brands, including corporate brands and product brands, that come into their minds in seventeen categories, including fashion, cosmetics, indoor-use entertainment devices, auto goods, food/beverages, computer/mobile phone, consumer electronics and education/media. Based on the rate of appearance, scores were summed up to rank the top-of-the-mind brand in Japan.
The results of the survey showed that out of a total 2,283 brands named, Sony achieved the highest overall score at 123.4 points, excelling by far second-ranking Chanel at 64.5 points, followed by Toyota at 58.8 points. Sony's outstanding performance can be attributed to its high recognition in the fields of consumer electronics, indoor-use entertainment devices and computer/mobile phone. The remaining top ten brands in order of their rankings are as follows: Nike, Honda, Toshiba, Panasonic, JTB, Hitachi and NTT DoCoMo.
Based on the results of this preliminary survey, influential brands were narrowed down to 1,200. Final results of the Brand Japan Survey will be unveiled at a seminar to be held at Akasaka Prince Hotel in Tokyo on April 9.
