NIKKEI MICRODEVICES to Offer English Leads

NIKKEI MICRODEVICES will offer leads in both Japanese and English starting with its October issue. The move comes as the magazine's first step in responding to enthusiastic requests from overseas readers and advertisers for dissemination of NIKKEI MICRODEVICES content in English. Says Yosuke Mochizuki, Editor-in-Chief, "Requests for an English version of the articles were first made in the 1990's by SEMATECH, a consortium in the U.S. formed to develop semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Now that we are beginning to see more of such inquiries, we sought to address those needs."

Articles of more than six pages in length will have their leads printed both in Japanese and English, enabling English-speaking readers to also understand article outlines. The October issue of NIKKEI MICRODEVICES will offer bilingual leads for two cover stories, one marketing paper and one technical paper. Mochizuki believes that LSI, in Japan's slack economy, is an industry sector where Japan could take global leadership. The magazine's mission is to disseminate as much LSI information as possible from Japan in English in an effort to draw attention to Japanese LSI makers, thereby contributing to the development of the industry as a whole.

NIKKEI WINDOWS 2000 Renamed NIKKEI WINDOWS FOR IT PROFESSIONALS

With its October issue, NIKKEI WINDOWS 2000 was renamed NIKKEI WINDOWS FOR IT PROFESSIONALS to make a fresh start as a magazine offering practical information on construction of Windows-based enterprise systems. Rather than targeting those who belong to information systems departments, NIKKEI WINDOWS FOR IT PROFESSIONALS caters more to the needs of system engineering professionals who are in charge of overseeing the entire level of corporate information systems from design to construction, introduction, management and operation.

In addition to reporting on cutting-edge information on the Windows OS, the newly revamped NIKKEI WINDOWS FOR IT PROFESSIONALS also sheds light on Windows-related products and technology, solution information applicable in corporate levels, and forecasts on what will happen in the future. The premier issue as NIKKEI WINDOWS FOR IT PROFESSIONALS, published on September 25, features two cover stories on how to boost Windows NT/2000 availability to near 100% and on effective troubleshooting tips for NT/2000. The October issue carried a total of 51 ad pages.

WORLD PC EXPO 2001 Ends in Success

WORLD PC EXPO 2001, held at Makuhari Messe from September 19 to 22, has closed in success, drawing over 300,000 visitors over the four-day period. The show fared well in terms of the number of visitors, despite the negative impacts of the tragedy in the U.S., powerful typhoons visiting the Tokyo area, and the Nimda computer virus. The number of exhibitors counted a record 792, of which a third was from outside of Japan, making the name WORLD PC EXPO more befitting than ever. Especially notable this year was the increase of Chinese exhibitors hiking from 1 last year to 27.

Organized under the theme of "Exploring the Broadband Society: A Challenge with the Big E," high-speed network infrastructure was laid throughout the venue this year with the aim of offering better networking environment for both the exhibitors and the visitors. Another attempt tried for the first time this year was the Internet WORLD PC EXPO ("iWPC") opened as the show's official website to boost advance registrations. The website also functioned as a matchmaking platform between visitors with certain information needs and exhibitors capable of offering that information. The e-mail news service aimed at introducing overseas exhibitors to the potential buyers in Japan was also very popular.

With the support from Japan-American Chamber of Commerce of Silicon Valley, an exhibition space was used to solicit donations for the victims of the U.S. terrorist attacks, for which approximately US$15,000 was collected and donated to the U.S Red Cross Disaster Fund.

WORLD PC EXPO 2002 will be held from October 17-20, 2002 at Tokyo Big Sight.
